Bow River Bridge: Deerfoot Extension

The Bow River Bridges form part of the Deerfoot Trail extension to Highway 2 at the south end of Calgary. This project created a much needed crossing of the highway over the Bow River, and represents the largest value engineering project undertaken on behalf of Alberta Transportation. Value engineering was achieved by providing a state-of-the-art, contractor-driven alternate to the base bid that satisfied the client's need for an accelerated schedule and the contractor's desire for simplified construction.

This alternative design utilized prestressed/post-tensioned NU precast girders, which span at 65 metres, and represented the largest plant cast precast elements produced in North America.
